life lessons in difficult days

Found this post from 6 years ago when my uncle passed away on my aunt’s birthday, Feb 13. I had lunch with my aunt yesterday and she still exudes much joy and faith.

Life Lessons in Difficult Days

Over the last several weeks, our family has watched my uncle slowly fade away. Although it has been difficult, there have been several lessons that the Lord has clearly shown me…

Sweetness of Love

My aunt tenderly and affectionately cared for my uncle each and every day. She took time to meet his needs and see that he was comfortable. After 42 years of marriage, she was devoted to him and loved him dearly until his last breath. The sweetness of this love brought tears to my eyes time and time again. It reminded me to open my eyes to the needs of my loved ones around me….to be willing to go the extra mile, to take time to lovingly care for them, be a devoted, faithful wife, mother, and friend….to taste the sweetness of love.

Blessing of Community

My aunt and uncle have been life-long members of Highland Park Baptist Church. This community showered my aunt with love, prayers, meals, and visits over the last several weeks. It reminded me of the importance of community – being plugged into a body of believers- to intentionally be connected to others. And, that even the little things we do, whether it be a phone call or a meal, are incredible blessings to others.

Strength of Faith

Time and time again, my aunt’s faith has been her strength. She knew and relied on the fact that God is in control. Even on the hardest days, she would say “I am blessed.” She could see past the momentary troubles to the hope we have in Christ. It reminded me to cling to the truth of this scripture:

“Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.” Isaiah 12:2
